THE CENTRAL NAVAL MUSEUM
The world's largest naval museum came into existence on Peter the Great’s orders in 1709, in the Western wing of the Admiralty, and in 1940 it changed its location - nowadays it occupies the famous Stock Exchange building, built at the beginning of the 19th century by the architect Thomas de Thomon.in one of the fanciest historical places of St. Petersburg – on the Spit of Vasilievsky Island with its famous Rostral Pillars, symbols of the sea, decorated with sculptures, allegorically symbolizing Russian rivers. Dedicated to the history of the Russian navy, which was born in st.peersburg, the museum boasts an impressive collection of over 800,000 items, including «the Grandfather of the Russian Navy» - the old boat of Peter the Great, while its first exhibits were ships' collections that belonged to Peter the Great and the Model Chamber of the Admiralty. The 10 halls of the museum, which was closed by Nicholas I and opened again in 1867 after an imperative Russian public request, also features a collection of arms (old cannons, arquebus, small and cold arms), ship models' collection, wonderful collection of painting, graphic and sculpture, disposing works by prominent marine painters I.Ivasovsky and A.Bogolyubov, collection of marine stores, private belongings of the emperors Peter I, Paul I and empress Catherine II, naval costumes' collection.

Closed on Monday and tueday, and on the last Thursday of every month.
