Founded in 1703, the world's largest martial museum occupied the "Memorial Hall" at the Petersburg arsenal on Litejny Prospect until 1868, when it was moved to the building of the Crownwork arsenal, constructed in 1849-1860 to the project of architect Peter Tamansky. The collection, recounting Russia's military history, the development of its arms and armour and the work of military engineers and signallers, is not restricted by the 13 halls of the museum – there is a unique outdoor exhibition featuring a collection of heavy artillery such as tanks, missile launchers, 18th century war machinery and weaponry from ancient times to the present day.
